Godh Barai/Seemantham

Introduction

Seemantham (Seemantonnayana, “parting of the hair”) is one of the 16 samskaras described in the Grihya Sutras. It is performed in the 4th, 6th or 8th month of the first pregnancy, in the Shukla Paksha, on an auspicious day. The husband parts the wife’s hair upward from the front with a porcupine quill, a bunch of unripe udumbara (fig) fruit and darbha grass, while chanting Vedic mantras. This is believed to protect the mother and child from negative influences and to bring peace of mind.

Godh Bharai (literally “filling the lap”) is usually held in the 7th or 8th month. Family and friends bless the mother, shower her with gifts and fill her lap with fruits, coconut, dry fruits and sweets, wishing her a healthy delivery. In Tamil Nadu, the Valaikappu ceremony adds the ritual of adorning the mother with colourful bangles.

History & Background

Tradition says that Abhimanyu learned the secret of the chakravyuha while still in Subhadra’s womb, as Arjuna described it to her. This is cited to show the belief that the unborn child absorbs the surroundings, which is why a calm, joyful and spiritually uplifting atmosphere is created for the mother during pregnancy.

Evolution into Godh Bharai:
Over time, the Vedic rite blended with regional folk customs, producing festive forms such as Godh Bharai, Valaikappu, Srimantham and Dohale Jevan. These stress community blessings, gifts, music and food alongside the religious rites.
